Basically it started when
Tommy, Al and Kay joined Gråsten Garden. Gråsten Garden is a
combined concert and marching band, consisting of youths at
the age of 10-23 years. The three joined at the age of 10 in
1990. Back then they hardly ever spoke together as Tommy was
part of the brass band and Al and Kay played drums. Actually
they didn’t talk very much before Gråsten Garden had to go
on a trip to Copenhagen to participate in a competition for
orchestras like Gråsten Garden. In the bus Tommy began
talking to Kay who said that Al was a Queen fan just like
Tommy. That was the beginning of a friendship that later
resulted in the start of Shockwave which later became
Ball’N’Chain, as Al told Tommy that he and his brother Kay
were trying to start a band, but needed a bass player. As
Tommy had played the bass a little in school, he said yes.
At that time it was Kay who was to play the drums, but after
a few weeks, they agreed that Kay was to play the bass and
Tommy should sit behind the drum kit. After Al, Kay and Tommy
talked in Copenhagen it was to be another four weeks before
they held their first practice session. They practiced some
tunes so that they could play at Al and Kay’s mother’s 40th
birthday. And so they spent three days, the weekend before
the party practicing old Beatles and Smokie tunes. And a week
later they actually stood on a stage for the first time as a
band. They played numbers like “Have You Ever Seen the Rain”
and “I Saw Her Standing There”. And all the guests just sat
in their chairs and looked as the three dead-nervous friends
fought their way through a half-hour of playing music on a
stage for the first time. But back then it wasn’t Shockwave
or Ball’N’Chain. They didn’t really have a name, as they had
only played live once with only three days of practice in
advance. Then Al suggested that they applied for a lead
singer, as Al didn’t wanted to sing, and Kay and Tommy also
didn’t want to. So Al suggested Bob. Al and Kay have known
Bob for many years through school. And Bob said he’d love to
try, so just after the summer holiday in 1997 the four guys
held their first practice session as a complete band. Then
after some time they came up with their name: Shockwave.Just
two days after Tommy came home from a trip to London, in the
fall of 1998, they all met at MS Studios in a little town
near Sønderborg where Tommy lives. They should record their
first demo CD.They used four days to record three songs,
which they could have done in only two or two-and-a-half
days if only Michael, the producer, didn’t have a Nintendo
64… But after those four days they had their first CD on MD
and the next week, Michael had the first official Shockwave
CD. Shockwave agreed on celebrating the event, and held a
meeting at their meeting room, the local pizzeria in Tinglev
and afterwards they went back to practice…perhaps for
another CD.About a month later, they had to play live at
Bob’ fathers birthday, and in the evening they went on stage
and played for about two hours. And this time the guests
where dancing and cheering. So they continued practicing at
Tinglev School, where they had gotten a room, and they
actually held an audition for a girl whose father knew Al
and Kay’s father. But it didn’t result in anything, so they
have just continued playing and practicing for a great New
Years party 1999/2000. But six months before the party it
was cancelled. That resulted in a period that lasted about a
year.During this year many things happened for the band. At
first Bob joined the army, so he wasn’t home very often.
Later on, he stated, that he actually didn’t want to
continue in the band, so the Shockwave time was officially
brought to an end. Then in late November 1999, Al, Kay and
Tommy was asked to play at a school, but cancelled at the
last minute, as they couldn’t’ play “their” music.
They, of course, wanted to play rock’n’roll, but the other
members in the “band” didn’t want to, so Tommy, Al, and Kay
said no one week before the concert. Then at Christmas 1999,
They were all together for the first time since the summer
’99. Then Bob had to admit that he wanted to continue after
all, so they agreed on starting over with a new name, new
music style and …well, to start all over again. And as they
all love Glam Rock and Hair Metal (Cinderella, Warrant, Kiss
etc.) they decided they wanted to play that sort of music.
And they came up with their new name : Ball 'n' Chain. Recently
they practiced for the first time in just about a year. They
practiced three days and with a spirit that surprised them
all. They had never played so good or so much.So now they
just sit and wait for Tommy to finish school at the end of
June 2000. A month earlier Bob is finished in the army, and
then they want to make a new demo CD. |
